The Kremlin said Monday that Russia is prepared to assist Iran amid escalating tensions in the Middle East but is waiting for Tehran to clarify what form of support it seeks.
Speaking to reporters, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the offer of help “all depends on what Iran needs,” according to Russian state media outlet TASS. He added that Moscow had already extended mediation efforts and reaffirmed its support for Iran.
Peskov confirmed that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday to discuss the escalating situation and potential avenues for cooperation. During the meeting, Araghchi is expected to deliver a personal letter from Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, formally requesting assistance from Moscow. The contents of the letter have not been made public.
The developments follow President Trump’s announcement Saturday night that U.S. forces conducted airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites—Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow. According to reports, six bunker-buster bombs hit the fortified Fordow facility, while over two dozen Tomahawk missiles were fired at the other two locations.
