by | Jun 5, 2025

President Trump held a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday, according to China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency. The conversation, initiated at Trump’s request, comes amid ongoing trade negotiations between Washington and Beijing.

On truth social after the call, President Trump announced he had a “very good” phone call with Xi, describing the roughly 90-minute conversation as a productive discussion centered almost entirely on trade. The two leaders reviewed details of the recently agreed-upon trade deal, with Trump calling the outcome “a very positive conclusion for both Countries.” He noted that the issue of rare earth products was addressed, adding, “There should no longer be any questions respecting the complexity” of those materials.

Trump stated that follow-up meetings between U.S. and Chinese officials would be held soon, with the location still to be determined. Representing the U.S. will be Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. He also confirmed that President Xi extended a formal invitation for him and the First Lady to visit China—an offer he accepted.
