Pentagon to Reduce U.S. Role in NATO Advisory Groups

The Pentagon plans to scale back U.S. participation in several NATO advisory groups, affecting about 200 personnel and mostly reducing involvement in the alliance’s 30 Centers of Excellence, which train NATO forces in various areas of warfare, officials said.

Instead of a full withdrawal, the Pentagon will gradually reduce personnel by not replacing those whose postings expire. U.S. participation in the centers will continue in a limited capacity. Advisory groups facing cuts include those focused on energy security and naval warfare, while involvement in NATO bodies for special operations and intelligence will also decline, though some functions will shift elsewhere within the alliance.
