John Ullyot, the former top spokesperson at the Pentagon, announced he will resign at the end of this week. Ullyot said he continues his strong support for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and had only planned to serve in an acting capacity for two months.
“I made clear to Secretary Hegseth before the inauguration that I was not interested in being number two to anyone in public affairs,” Ullyot said in a statement to POLITICO. “Last month, as that time approached, the Secretary and I talked and could not come to an agreement on another good fit for me at DOD. So I informed him today that I will be leaving at the end of this week.”
Ullyot, a Marine Corps veteran, previously held senior communications positions in the first Trump administration, including assistant secretary for public and intergovernmental affairs at the Department of Veterans Affairs and National Security Council spokesperson. He also worked on Trump’s 2016 campaign. He most recently
oversaw the decision to reassign workspace access from longstanding media outlets to conservative platforms like Breitbart and One America News.
Sean Parnell, a combat veteran and former congressional candidate, was named chief Pentagon spokesperson in February.
