Judge Cannon, overseeing the classified documents case involving President Trump, has denied a motion to dismiss charges against Walt Nauta, one of his co-defendants.
Cannon emphasized in her order that her decision on Nauta's motion should not be interpreted as an indication of how she will rule on Trump's motion or any other pending motions before the court.
Nauta, Trump's personal valet, had requested that U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon throw out the indictment against him. Nauta's lawyers argued that he was unfairly charged due to inadequate cooperation with the investigation and alleged personal bias from prosecutors against one of his attorneys.
Special counsel Jack Smith's team refuted these claims, and Judge Cannon, in her four-page order, stated that Nauta had failed to meet the stringent criteria necessary for case dismissal.
Nauta, along with Mar-a-Lago property manager Carlos De Oliveira, is accused of conspiring with Trump to obstruct the retrieval of classified documents taken to the Palm Beach, Florida estate following ‘the end’ of Trump's presidency. All three defendants have pleaded not guilty.
A trial date has not yet been set. Trump has also filed a motion to dismiss the case.
