House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) revealed on X that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to address Congress in late July.
“I am pleased to announce that Israeli PM Netanyahu will address a joint meeting of Congress on July 24th,” Johnson posted.
Netanyahu’s office had previously declined the proposed date of June 13 for the address, as reported by the Washington Examiner.
This will be the first time Netanyahu has addressed Congress since 2015 when he was invited by then-Speaker John Boehner to offer criticism of the nuclear deal with Iran.
Netanyahu's appearance sparked controversy, mainly because then-President Barack Obama was not informed in advance. The invitation was seen as political sabotage and an attempt to undermine the nuclear deal. Consequently, several Democrats chose to boycott Netanyahu's address.
Before Netanyahu's July appearance was confirmed, some Democrats, including Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), indicated they might boycott his speech.
