House Oversight Chairman James Comer and Federal Law Enforcement Subcommittee Chairman Clay Higgins have opened a congressional investigation into the recent violent riots in Los Angeles, which erupted during federal efforts to remove criminal illegal aliens.
In letters to California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, Comer and Higgins requested records and communications between their offices and law enforcement agencies at all levels related to the riots and the origin of weapons used by rioters.
The lawmakers criticized Newsom and Bass for opposing President Trump’s June 8 deployment of the National Guard, writing that local authorities had clearly lost control of the situation. They accused both officials of promoting sanctuary policies that obstruct immigration enforcement and enable violent actors regardless of their legal status or intent.
Comer and Higgins also called on Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel to provide information on attacks against law enforcement officers and the overall response by state and local authorities to the unrest.
House Republicans also opened an investigation Friday into Chicago-born billionaire Neville Singham, now living in Shanghai, over allegations that he may be acting on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party by financially backing the protest groups. In letters sent to Singham and Attorney General Pam Bondi, the Oversight Committee raised concerns about the CCP’s “Strategy of Sowing Discord” and suggested Singham could be part of a broader influence operation, threatening to subpoena him if he fails to cooperate.
