House rejects Speaker Johnson’s proposal linking government funding to voter ID requirement

by | Sep 18, 2024

The House on Wednesday voted down Speaker Mike Johnson’s plan that sought to tie temporary government funding to a requirement for states to mandate proof of citizenship for voter registration. The 220-202 vote leaves the path forward on government funding uncertain.

Lawmakers are still far from completing the twelve annual appropriations bills necessary to fund federal agencies for the upcoming fiscal year. To avoid a partial government shutdown set to begin on Oct. 1, a stopgap measure will be needed.

Johnson is now expected to pursue an alternative plan to avert the shutdown, though he has yet to reveal specifics.
