Greenland and Denmark Request Ministerial Meeting with U.S. Secretary of State, Rubio Floats Purchase of Greenland

by | Jan 6, 2026

The Greenlandic government and Denmark have requested a ministerial meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt, and Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, according to a post by Motzfeldt on Facebook.

The request follows strong statements by the United States concerning Greenland and aims to open a formal channel for discussion at the ministerial level. Motzfeldt noted that, despite repeated requests throughout 2025 from both Greenland and Denmark, a meeting with Secretary Rubio has not yet taken place. She added that the post is intended to provide clear information on the timing and status of the request.

Marco Rubio reportedly told lawmakers during a closed briefing that recent rhetoric toward Greenland was not an indication of an imminent invasion, but part of an effort to pursue the island’s purchase from Denmark. The White House said Tuesday that President Trump and his advisers are weighing multiple pathways to acquire Greenland.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt explained:

“President Trump has made it well known that acquiring Greenland is a national security priority of the United States, and it’s vital to deter our adversaries in the Arctic region,” adding that “the President and his team are discussing a range of options to pursue this important foreign policy goal, and of course, utilizing the U.S. Military is always an option at the Commander in Chief’s disposal.”
