America First Legal (AFL) released documents obtained from its investigation into the Biden administration’s communications with the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), Imran Ahmed’s UK-based censorship group. The emails from the DHS and the Department of State reveal how the Biden administration mobilized the federal government’s counterterrorism assets to support CCDH’s campaign of global censorship.
The Biden administration's strategy justified said censorship by claiming that Internet-based communications platforms make Americans vulnerable to domestic terrorist recruitment and other harmful content. Consequently, the administration relied on the national security state and allied technology companies to censor its political opponents.
As part of the effort to control information, the Biden strategy explained that they will also build a community of critical partners, “including state, local, tribal, and territorial governments, as well as foreign allies and partners, civil society, the technology sector, academia, and more.”
Accordingly, the Biden Administration declared its endorsement of the Christchurch Call to Action to Eliminate “Terrorist and Violent Extremist Content Online,” emphasizing the importance of a global, multi-stakeholder approach in partnership with governments and other entities.
The Trump Administration declined to participate in the “call to action” regarding censorship on free speech grounds. On the same day, it reportedly released an online tool for users to report instances of suspected “political bias” by Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, or other online platforms.
The Missouri v. Biden case highlighted how Biden administration officials promptly pushed social media companies to deplatform and demote what they referred to as “the disinfo dozen.” In July of 2021, then White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki acknowledged “flagging problematic posts for Facebook.” Psaki's statement suggested that individuals identified in CCDH's report, deemed responsible for 65 percent of anti-vaccine “misinformation”, should not continue to have an active presence on Facebook.
