The FBI has released new footage of the individual who planted pipe bombs outside the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and Republican National Committee (RNC) offices in Washington, D.C., on January 5, 2021.
The suspect, captured on video, is believed to be approximately 5-foot-7, according to the FBI. The attempted attack occurred the night before the January 6 Capitol riot, but investigators claim they have not established a clear connection between the two events. “Without being able to confirm the suspect’s identity, it is very hard to definitively establish motive,” said David Sundberg, assistant director of the FBI’s Washington field office. “It would be difficult for us to state that there is a link, although we can’t state there is not one.”
At the time of the incident, the individual was wearing a grey hoodie, a face mask, black gloves, and Nike Air Max Speed Turf shoes. The FBI noted that fewer than 25,000 pairs of this shoe model were sold between August 2018 and the date of the attack.
The newly released footage shows the suspect placing a bomb near a bench outside the DNC building shortly before 8 p.m. The second bomb was placed behind the RNC building at around 8:16 p.m. Surveillance footage last captured the suspect walking past a row of houses at 8:18 p.m., wearing a backpack believed to have been used to transport the devices.
At the time the first device was found on January 6, Vice President Kamala Harris and then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi were near the DNC office.
