The FBI arrested a suspect Thursday in its nearly five-year investigation into who planted pipe bombs in Washington on the eve of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot, according to a law enforcement official cited by The Associated Press.
The arrest marks the first time investigators have identified a suspect in a case that had remained unresolved for years and fueled widespread speculation. Brian Cole has been named as the suspect in custody, according to two senior law enforcement officials familiar with the case. An FBI official confirmed the arrest occurred Thursday morning, with a Justice Department news conference scheduled later Thursday to formally announce it.
The pipe bombs were discovered on the evening of Jan. 5, 2021, near the headquarters of the Democratic and Republican national committees in Washington, D.C. No one was injured, but the FBI previously said both devices were capable of causing deadly harm.
