FBI Director Kash Patel announced on December 26 that the agency will permanently close its Hoover headquarters, relocating staff to a safer, modern facility. The move, coordinated with President Trump and Congress, comes after more than 20 years of stalled efforts to replace the aging building.
Patel said taxpayers were previously facing nearly $5 billion for a new headquarters not expected to open until 2035. The plan was scrapped in favor of repurposing the existing Reagan Building, saving billions and allowing the transition to begin immediately with safety and infrastructure upgrades already underway.
Most of the FBI’s headquarters workforce will relocate once upgrades are complete, while remaining staff will continue field operations. Patel emphasized that the move will better allocate resources toward defending the homeland, combating violent crime, and enhancing national security.
