DOJ Sues Six States for Failing to Provide Voter Registration Lists

by | Sep 26, 2025

The Justice Department filed federal lawsuits Thursday against California, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania for refusing to provide their statewide voter registration lists.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi said states must keep voter rolls “accurate, accessible, and secure,” warning that failure to do so will trigger legal action. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon added that clean voter rolls protect against fraud and maintain public confidence in elections.

The lawsuits invoke the National Voter Registration Act, the Help America Vote Act, and the Civil Rights Act of 1960, which empower the DOJ to demand access and review of voter registration data.
