Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has revoked the security clearances of 37 current and former officials accused of politicizing or mishandling intelligence, including figures tied to the Obama-era assessment on Russian influence in the 2016 election.
An ODNI memo issued Monday said the group, which included a former top aide to Obama DNI James Clapper, had either “politicized or weaponized” intelligence, failed to protect classified material, or disregarded tradecraft standards. The directive stated their access to classified information, facilities, and systems was to be terminated immediately, along with any government contracts or employment, and all credentials surrendered.
Among those named was Vinh Nguyen, who assisted Clapper in producing the 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment that asserted Russia preferred Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton — a report later discredited.
“Being entrusted with a security clearance is a privilege, not a right,” Gabbard said in a statement, adding that those who break their oath “have broken the sacred trust they promised to uphold.” She emphasized that the Intelligence Community must remain dedicated to the Constitution and “maintain a laser-like focus” on safeguarding the American people.
