Democrats flip George Santos’ former seat in special New York election

by | Feb 13, 2024

Former Rep. Tom Suozzi (D) has reclaimed his previous seat in the House, providing Democrats with a significant gain that will further diminish the GOP House majority.

Suozzi emerged victorious over Republican Mazi Pilip in the special election to fill the seat left vacant by former Rep. George Santos (R), who was expelled from his position in December following the filing of criminal charges against him and numerous false claims about his background.

The election was viewed as a significant indicator leading up to the November general election, given New York's pivotal role in the Democrats' strategy to regain control of the House. The 3rd Congressional District is among five in the state that supported Biden in 2020 but elected a Republican representative in 2022.
