Covid committee releases Fauci transcript from January interview

by | May 31, 2024

On Friday, Chairman Brad Wenstrup of the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic published the transcript from Dr. Anthony Fauci’s transcribed interview.

Dr. Fauci, who served as the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), was a key figure in America’s public health response to COVID-19. His closed-door, 14-hour testimony over two days in January 2024 has been crucial to the Subcommittee's investigations into the origins of COVID-19, domestic policy shortcomings during the pandemic, and potential improvements to the U.S. public health system.

Below are key takeaways from Dr. Fauci’s transcribed interview:

Social Distancing: Dr. Fauci testified that the federal health officials' recommendation for Americans to maintain six feet of social distancing was arbitrary and not based on scientific evidence. He stated that this guideline “sort of just appeared” without any supporting studies, leading to widespread school and small business closures nationwide.

Masking Children: Dr. Fauci could not recall any scientific evidence supporting the requirement for children to wear masks. This is particularly concerning given that mask-wearing has been linked to learning loss and significant speech development issues among American children.

Travel Restrictions: Dr. Fauci fully supported all travel restrictions implemented by the Trump Administration at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. This contradicts the public perception that these restrictions were xenophobic. During his interview, the Biden Administration’s counsel oddly barred Dr. Fauci from answering questions regarding whether he recommended these travel restrictions.

Lab Leak Theory: Dr. Fauci recognized that the lab leak hypothesis is a legitimate consideration and not a conspiracy theory. This admission comes nearly four years after he supported the publication of the controversial “Proximal Origin” paper, which sought to discredit the lab leak hypothesis.

Gain-of-Function Research: Dr. Fauci frequently engaged in semantic arguments regarding the definition of “gain-of-function” research to avoid admitting that the NIH funded this type of research in China. Despite being well-versed in the commonly accepted definition, he repeatedly refused to provide a clear explanation, opting instead to use his own “operative definition.” This tactic was evident both in his closed-door testimony and during a 2021 hearing with Sen. Rand Paul.

Vaccine Mandates:  Dr. Fauci acknowledged that vaccine mandates during the COVID-19 pandemic could potentially lead to increased vaccine hesitancy in the future. He also admitted that these mandates were not sufficiently studied before being implemented. Previously, Dr. Fauci had stated that making life difficult for people could override their ideological resistance to vaccination.

Conflicts of Interest: Dr. Fauci asserted that his staff had no conflicts of interest concerning the origins of COVID-19. However, his Senior Advisor, Dr. David Morens, was reportedly “best friends” with Dr. Peter Daszak, the disgraced EcoHealth Alliance President facing imminent debarment. Given that Dr. Morens had worked under Dr. Fauci for over 20 years, it is highly improbable that Dr. Fauci was genuinely unaware of this relationship.

Feigned Ignorance: Dr. Fauci professed a lack of recollection regarding numerous issues and events related to the pandemic over 100 times during his testimony. Despite EcoHealth Alliance conducting risky gain-of-function research in China, Dr. Fauci claimed he was unaware of the details of the grant and denied having a relationship with its President, Dr. Peter Daszak.

Grant Approval: Dr. Fauci admitted that he approved every NIAID grant, both foreign and domestic, without reviewing the proposals. He also could not confirm if NIAID has any mechanisms in place for overseeing the foreign laboratories they fund. This flawed grant process, which relies heavily on trusting grantees without verification, leaves room for exploitation by adversaries.

Alongside the transcript, the Select Subcommittee released a staff memo summarizing the main points from Dr. Fauci’s interview, available here.

The Subcommittee has also made public four more transcripts from senior public health officials. These documents, including Dr. Fauci’s transcript, can be accessed below:
