On Monday, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan and House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer cautioned Attorney General Merrick Garland about potential contempt proceedings.
They cited the Department of Justice's inadequate provision of materials in response to a subpoena for documents pertaining to Robert Hur's investigation of Biden’s classified documents.
In late February, Jordan and Comer issued a subpoena with a deadline of March 7, demanding documents from the DOJ. However, they expressed dissatisfaction with the materials provided by the department.
They also underscored that various news outlets allegedly obtained transcripts of Hur's interviews with Biden before either committee received them.
Comer and Jordan asserted that the Department continues to withhold additional materials requested by the Committees' subpoenas. Specifically, they mentioned the audio recordings of Special Counsel Hur's interviews with Joe Biden and the transcript and audio recordings of Special Counsel Hur's interviews with Mark Zwonitzer, Biden's ghostwriter.
They concluded that the February 27 subpoenas create a legal obligation to produce the material. They set a deadline of no later than 12:00 p.m. on April 8, 2024 to produce all responsive materials, noting if the department fails to reach the deadline the Committees will consider further action in initiating contempt of Congress proceedings.
