Approximately 15,000 IRS employees have been identified for potential termination as early as next week as the White House looks to reduce government spending, according to ABC News.
The employees in question are on probationary status with limited tenure and do not hold positions directly tied to processing tax filings, according to a source familiar. It remains unclear what impact the layoffs could have on the current tax season, though much of the IRS’s work revolves around processing and enforcing payments.
On Thursday, a Department of Government Efficiency employee visited IRS headquarters to inquire about the agency’s technology and auditing procedures.
