Victoria Nuland will retire this month, State Dept. announces

by | Mar 5, 2024

The State Department announced on Tuesday that Victoria Nuland will depart from her position this month.

Nuland, a career foreign service officer who previously served as Assistant Secretary of State for Europe during the Obama administration, retired after Donald Trump's presidency began. She later rejoined the government as Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs in the Biden administration.

She was considered a potential successor to Wendy Sherman as deputy Secretary of State and had been acting in the deputy role since Sherman’s retirement seven months ago. However, she lost an internal personnel contest within the administration when Biden nominated Kurt Campbell for the No. 2 position. Campbell assumed the role last month.
