Venezuela’s Attorney General and national ombudsman tendered their resignations to the National Assembly on Wednesday, the legislature’s secretary said, creating an immediate leadership shakeup in the nation’s legal apparatus.
Tarek William Saab, 63, has served as attorney general since 2017, after being appointed by Venezuela’s Constituent National Assembly, a role he held for nearly nine years. The ombudsman, Ruiz Angulo, has also been in his post since 2017, when he succeeded Saab following Saab’s own move into the attorney general role.
Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez said lawmakers will select interim officials to fill both roles while permanent replacements are chosen.
