US Sanctions Top Aide to Hungary’s Orbán Ahead of Trump’s White House Takeover

by | Jan 7, 2025

The United States has imposed sanctions on Antal Rogán, the influential cabinet chief of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, over alleged corruption. The move comes just days before Orban’s ally, Donald Trump, assumes office as president.

Rogán, a key figure in Orbán administration, wields significant power, overseeing Hungary’s security services and controlling the state media apparatus that has bolstered Orbán’s electoral dominance since 2010.

The Hungarian government has not yet responded to the sanctions.

“Throughout his tenure as a government official, Rogán has orchestrated Hungary’s system for distributing public contracts and resources to cronies loyal to himself and the Fidesz political party,” the U.S. Treasury Department said in a statement on Tuesday.
