United Sovereign Americans files federal lawsuit alleging Pennsylvania violated voting laws

by | Jun 24, 2024

A federal lawsuit has been filed against the state of Pennsylvania by United Sovereign Americans, a right-wing group with chapters in 24 states, seeking to compel the state to address flaws in its voting process ahead of the November Presidential Election.

The group claims to have uncovered evidence of Pennsylvania violating federal law, specifically the National Voter Registration Act, due to purportedly illegal or invalid voter registration records. The lawsuit contends that the state has failed to meet federal standards by allowing voters to register with questionable addresses and by processing over 3 million flawed voter applications.

Representing United Sovereign Americans in this legal action are attorneys Bruce L. Castor Jr. and Michael van der Veen, both of whom served as lawyers for President Trump during his second impeachment trial.

The lawsuit alleges that the state has surpassed the voting error benchmarks outlined in the Help America Vote Act during the 2022 elections, casting doubt on the reliability and integrity of the electoral process.

The group argues that Pennsylvania has neglected to implement necessary safeguards as required by various statutes, thus compromising the accuracy and trustworthiness of election results. The lawsuit calls for the federal court to mandate Pennsylvania to rectify the identified issues.

“It is possible for election officials acting ‘under color of law’ to commit election fraud by performing acts such as diluting ballots with invalid ones (ballot stuffing), rendering false tabulations of votes, or preventing valid voter registrations or votes from being given effect in any election,” the lawsuit states.

The group warns that if the alleged practices from the 2022 elections persist into the 2024 election, it will result in an unfair and unreliable electoral process, causing harm to voters. The lawsuit asserts, “The commonwealth failed to ensure that … safeguards [for voters] were in place … thus destroying the integrity of the … election and making confidence in the election impossible. If the 2022 election performance is repeated in 2024, petitioners and all Pennsylvania voters will suffer damages.”

This is the second lawsuit filed by United Sovereign Americans; the first was against Maryland, which was dismissed by a district judge but is currently under appeal in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
