Ukraine Among First Nations to Access Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell Technology

by | Dec 30, 2024

Elon Musk’s Starlink has partnered with digital operator VEON to enhance satellite connectivity in Ukraine, utilizing its direct-to-cell services and making Ukraine one of the first countries in the world to implement this advanced technology.

The collaboration aims to expand 4G coverage to remote regions and provide reliable internet access during frequent blackouts caused by Russian interference. The rollout is set to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025, with further expansion planned for 2026 and beyond.

Starlink has played a critical role in Ukraine’s communication infrastructure since the war intensified in 2022. Its satellite internet services have been instrumental in battlefield operations and controlling Ukraine’s drone fleets, which are deployed in strikes against Russian targets. The company faced criticism after Russian military drones were found equipped with Starlink terminals, raising concerns over unauthorized usage.
