Additional U.S. Air Force warplanes and military assets are expected to be deployed to the Middle East in the coming days, a U.S. official told Air & Space Forces Magazine.
The move aims to bolster defenses against potential Iranian attacks on Israel and enhance U.S. military presence in the region following the explosion that killed Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.
On August 1, Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed “new defensive U.S. military deployments,” according to a White House readout.
Although Israel has not confirmed responsibility, the killing of Haniyeh in Tehran is widely believed to be an Israeli operation. Both Biden and Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III have pledged U.S. support in defending Israel against any Iranian aggression.
In April, U.S. Air Force fighters successfully intercepted over 70 drones launched by Iran against Israel, as part of a coordinated defense that neutralized an attack involving about 300 missiles and drones. This operation included F-15Es from the 494th Fighter Squadron at RAF Lakenheath and the 335th Fighter Squadron from Seymour-Johnson Air Force Base, along with F-16s, coalition fighters, and U.S. Navy ships. Israel handled most of the air and missile defense with its own systems.
Currently, the U.S. has 12 warships in the region, including the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt and its battle group. In April, additional F-15Es were deployed to the region just before the attack, highlighting the U.S. military’s rapid response capabilities, as noted by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr.
As Iran considers its response to Haniyeh’s death, Secretary Austin reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to supporting Israel’s defense. “If Israel is attacked, we certainly will help,” Austin stated on July 31. “You saw us do that in April, and you can expect us to act similarly again. However, we are working to reduce tensions and address issues through diplomacy.”
