President Trump has ordered an increase in tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, raising the rate from 25% to 50% effective June 4, 2025. The move comes in response to continued concerns over foreign producers flooding the U.S. market with underpriced metal, which the administration says undermines American industry and poses a national security threat.
The decision builds on previous findings by the Commerce Department that large-scale imports of steel and aluminum harm the country’s ability to maintain strong industrial and defense capabilities. Despite earlier tariffs, the White House says the domestic industries have not yet reached production levels necessary for long-term strength.
The order allows the United Kingdom to remain under the current 25% rate as part of a recent trade agreement, though that could change if compliance falters. The administration says it will continue to monitor global imports and warns of severe penalties for attempts to bypass the new rules.
