Trump-Backed Paxton Defeats Cornyn in Texas GOP Senate Runoff

by | May 27, 2026

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton defeated longtime Senator John Cornyn in Tuesday’s Republican Senate runoff, marking a victory for President Trump after endorsing Paxton just one week before the election.

Paxton’s win came in the most expensive Senate primary race in U.S. history, with outside groups and donors pouring millions into the contest.

Paxton will now face Democratic state Rep. James Talarico in the general election. Talarico emerged from the Democratic primary after defeating Rep. Jasmine Crockett and is aiming to become the first Democrat in nearly 40 years to win a Texas Senate race. Republicans are defending a narrow 53-47 Senate majority heading into November.
