Trump and Putin Set High-Level Meetings to Pursue Ukraine Peace Following Productive Call

by | Oct 16, 2025

President Trump announced a “very productive” phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, resulting in plans for a meeting with high-level advisors next week and a subsequent summit between the two leaders in Budapest, Hungary, aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.

During the call, Trump said Putin congratulated the United States on the “Great Accomplishment of Peace in the Middle East,” which Trump suggested could help guide negotiations to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. The two leaders also discussed post-war trade and thanked First Lady Melania Trump for her ongoing work with children.

Following the conversation, both sides agreed to convene a meeting of high-level advisors next week. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will lead the U.S. delegation, joined by other officials to be designated. A subsequent summit between Trump and Putin is planned in Budapest, Hungary, to seek a resolution to what Trump called the “inglorious” war.

Trump said he will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office tomorrow to review the call and discuss further steps, describing the conversation with Putin as “great progress.”
