The Supreme Court early Saturday ordered the Trump administration to halt any deportations of alleged Venezuelan gang members detained in Texas while ongoing litigation plays out.
Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented from the Court’s decision.
Without issuing a formal ruling on the detainees’ emergency application, the justices temporarily froze any removal efforts involving individuals held within the Northern District of Texas. “The government is directed not to remove any member of the putative class of detainees from the United States until further order of this court,” the brief order stated.
The court noted that the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has yet to rule on a similar request.
