Smartmatic settles defamation lawsuit against Newsmax as trial begins

by | Sep 26, 2024

Smartmatic reached a settlement with Newsmax on Thursday, just as a jury was being selected for their defamation lawsuit trial. The terms of the settlement have not been publicly disclosed.

The election technology company had sued Newsmax in 2021, alleging that the broadcaster sought to draw viewers away from Fox News by promoting claims that Smartmatic had helped manipulate the 2020 presidential election in favor of Joe Biden. The trial, expected to last up to four weeks, had just begun jury selection.

“Newsmax is pleased to announce it has resolved the litigation brought by Smartmatic through a confidential settlement,” a Newsmax spokesperson said in a statement.

Earlier this year, Smartmatic also settled a similar defamation lawsuit against One America News Network, though the details of that agreement were also kept confidential.
