Six Secret Service Agents Suspended Over Failures in Trump Assassination Attempt

by | Jul 10, 2025

Over recent months, six U.S. Secret Service agents were suspended for security failures tied to the July 13, 2024, attempted assassination of then-presidential candidate Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, an official confirmed. The disciplinary actions range from 10 to 42-day suspensions.

The suspensions impact agents across the chain of command, from supervisors to front-line personnel, according to a source familiar with the agency’s internal review. The confirmation comes just days before the one-year anniversary of the shooting that left Trump wounded and triggered sweeping scrutiny of federal protective services.

A Department of Homeland Security review following the Butler shooting cited cascading law enforcement failures and concluded that Trump had been left exposed to a preventable threat. The report sharply criticized the agency’s operational culture, stating, “The Secret Service has become bureaucratic, complacent, and static even though risks have multiplied and technology has evolved.”

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned 10 days after the shooting amid mounting backlash.
