Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup xAI filed a lawsuit Monday in federal court in Texas accusing Apple and OpenAI of conspiring to block competition in the AI market.
The complaint alleges that Apple’s exclusive integration of ChatGPT into its devices has “locked up markets to maintain their monopolies and prevent innovators like X and xAI from competing.” xAI is seeking billions of dollars in damages.
Apple’s operating system for iPhones, iPads, and Macs now features OpenAI’s chatbot as part of a partnership between the two companies. xAI argues that without that deal, Apple would have no reason to sideline Musk’s Grok and X apps in its App Store.
Musk reiterated the claims on his platform X, pointing to high user ratings for Grok while accusing Apple of refusing to feature it. Earlier this month, he threatened legal action, saying Apple’s policies “make it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store.”
