U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon sentenced Ryan Routh, the man convicted of attempting to assassinate President Trump, to life in prison on Wednesday, denying his request for a lighter sentence.
Routh’s attorney had argued that a 27-year sentence would be sufficient, claiming the failed plot caused no actual harm. Federal prosecutors countered, emphasizing that while citizens can oppose political candidates in lawful ways, murder is never an acceptable form of dissent.
