Kremlin Rejects Zelenskyy’s 60-Day Ceasefire Proposal, Says Russia Wants Long-Term Peace Deal

by | Oct 12, 2026

Russia has rejected Ukrainian President Zelenskyy’s proposal for a 60-day ceasefire to allow elections, insisting it wants a long-term peace agreement. The proposal followed President Trump’s statement Saturday that it was time for Ukraine to get a new president, as Russia continues to call for elections and question Zelenskyy’s legitimacy.

President Trump criticized Zelenskyy on Saturday for continuing to authorize attacks on Russian refineries. Speaking to reporters outside the White House, Trump said Zelenskyy “wants to make problems for the world” and warned, “He’d better damn well stop,” before suggesting Ukraine should “get a new leader who can make a deal.”

“Please tell Putin, give us two months, 60 days of total ceasefire, 60 days, and we will organize elections,” Zelenskyy told ABC’s This Week on Sunday.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov rejected the proposal on Monday, saying Russia does not want a temporary ceasefire. “We want long-term peace and are prepared to do everything possible to achieve it,” Peskov said.
