The 22-year-old Air National Guard member from Massachusetts accused of leaking highly classified military documents about the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and other national security secrets, pleaded guilty in federal court on Monday.
Update: On Monday, Jack Teixeira, a Massachusetts Air National Guardsman, acknowledged his role in one of the most significant breaches of national defense secrets in recent years.
He consented to a 16-year prison term, possibly the lengthiest sentence in an unlawful retention case. As outlined in the signed plea agreement submitted to the court, the 22-year-old Teixeira agreed to plead guilty to all six counts accusing him of willfully retaining and transmitting national defense information.
In return, prosecutors agreed not to pursue further charges against him under the Espionage Act.
Jack Teixeira appeared in a federal courthouse in Boston for a change of plea hearing almost a year after his arrest on account of the most consequential national security leak in years.
Teixeira has been in prison since he was arrested last April, in the incident that sparked concern about America's capability to safeguard its most sensitive information and prompted the Biden administration to scramble to contain diplomatic and military repercussions.
The Pentagon responded to the leak by implementing stricter controls to protect classified information. Additionally, the Air Force disciplined 15 personnel after its inspector general determined last year that several officials had intentionally neglected to address Teixeira's suspicious behavior.
Teixeira had previously entered a plea of not guilty to six charges of willfully retaining and transmitting national defense information under the Espionage Act. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
