Israel Launches Ground Offensive to Occupy Gaza City

by | Sep 16, 2025

The Israeli military began a full-scale ground operation in Gaza City on Monday, aiming to seize control of the enclave’s capital and eliminate Hamas, officials confirmed.

Defense Minister Israel Katz said capturing Gaza City would mark a decisive step toward Hamas’s defeat and increase leverage in hostage negotiations. Israeli forces said armored and infantry divisions have entered the city, with additional units set to join.

Ahead of the operation, Israeli airstrikes flattened high-rises across Gaza City. The IDF urged residents to flee south, claiming more than 300,000 have already evacuated. Tanks rolled in Monday night following a new wave of airstrikes.

The offensive was launched hours after Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Netanyahu in Jerusalem, where Rubio said there is only a “short window” for reaching a ceasefire and hostage deal.

U.S. officials told reporters the Trump administration is backing Israel’s decision, though emphasizing the war is Netanyahu’s to manage. As Israeli forces advanced, President Trump warned Hamas not to harm the 20 remaining live hostages.
