Iranian President Urges Israeli Withdrawal From Syrian Territory After Assad’s Fall

by | Jan 8, 2025

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has called for Israel to withdraw from Syrian territory following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s government, a long-standing ally of Tehran.

“The need for the Zionist regime to withdraw from the territories it occupied and the importance of respecting religious sentiments [in Syria], particularly regarding Shiite holy places and shrines, were among the concerns” discussed during a meeting, Pezeshkian stated during a briefing alongside Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.

Pezeshkian also issued a warning about the potential “reactivation of terrorist cells” in Syria, highlighting the ongoing instability in the region.

For his part, Sudani expressed Iraq’s commitment to respecting “the will of the Syrian people” and supporting any political or constitutional system chosen without external interference.
