House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer has subpoenaed Joe Biden’s physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, as part of an escalating investigation into a coordinated effort to conceal Biden’s mental decline while in office. O’Connor declined to sit for a transcribed interview, citing doctor-patient confidentiality, prompting the panel to compel his appearance on June 27.
In a letter to O’Connor, Comer rejected a proposed workaround that would have allowed written responses to be vetted by attorneys and a medical ethics expert, calling the offer “not acceptable” and insufficient for congressional oversight.
The subpoena marks the first issued in Comer’s probe into Biden’s cognitive condition and whether O’Connor’s February 2024 assessment—calling Biden “a healthy, active, robust 81-year-old male”—was influenced by personal or financial ties to the Biden family.
A source close to the investigation said the committee also intends to seek testimony from former White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, who recently revealed she has left the Democratic Party and plans to release a memoir titled Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside the Party Lines in October.
Committee staff are also in discussions with attorneys representing several Biden aides, including Jill Biden’s former chief of staff Anthony Bernal and ex-West Wing officials Annie Tomasini, Neera Tanden, and Ashley Williams. Comer has additionally requested appearances from Ron Klain, Anita Dunn, Bruce Reed, Mike Donilon, and Steve Ricchetti.
