James Comer and Jim Jordan, who are leading the Biden impeachment inquiry, sent a letter to the White House on Monday requesting documentation regarding the events that led to then-Vice President Biden's call for Ukraine to dismiss its prosecutor.
This new request comes after White House staff provided a briefing on March 1 to the respective committees chaired by Comer and Jordan. The briefing outlined then-Vice President Biden's December 2015 speech to the Ukrainian parliament and the undisclosed context surrounding it.
Previously reviewed documents indicate that the focus of the impeachment inquiry's investigation is the December 2015 visit to Kyiv by then-Vice President Biden. The inquiry centers on Biden's alleged demands for Ukraine to dismiss Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin, who was conducting an investigation into Burisma Holdings at the time.
Hunter Biden, the son of the vice president at the time, was a board member of Burisma Holdings during that period. Biden famously urged for the dismissal of the prosecutor, reportedly leveraging a $1 billion loan guarantee, as per his own subsequent statements.
The chairman wrote in their letter that evidence suggests then VP Biden had Shokin fired to alleviate pressure on Burisma, the Ukrainian energy company Hunter Biden was employed with, caused by Shokin’s investigation of Burisma and its owner, Mykola Zlochevsky.
The committee also reiterated its request for all drafts of then-Vice President Biden's speech to the Ukrainian parliament.
