Former FBI agent Zach Schoffstall, forced out during the Biden administration for refusing to pursue the group Patriot Front, has succeeded in unsealing documents related to the case. Schoffstall, previously with the FBI’s Salt Lake City division, opposed signing a warrant to search the group’s electronic devices, citing concerns about constitutional rights.
The unsealed affidavit attempted to link Patriot Front to the 2017 Charlottesville rally and the January 6 Capitol riot, but Schoffstall argued the FBI omitted exculpatory evidence. He claimed the agency knew of Patriot Front’s efforts to “avoid violence” and that the group’s protest activities were constitutionally protected.
Schoffstall’s stance led to his departure from the FBI, and he believes the agency misled the court with its affidavit. Despite the government’s push, the case against Patriot Front members resulted in minimal legal consequences, with most members receiving minor penalties.
Schoffstall has called for a task force to investigate alleged FBI misconduct and believes whistleblowers should be reinstated and involved in reform efforts.
