President Emmanuel Macron has appointed Eric Lombard as France’s new finance minister in a cabinet reshuffle announced on Monday. Lombard will face the urgent task of stabilizing the country’s finances following the collapse of the previous administration over a contentious budget dispute.
The new finance minister will play a pivotal role in Prime Minister François Bayrou’s government, which aims to pass the 2025 budget swiftly and withstand potential no-confidence motions from opposition parties. However, navigating the fractured National Assembly will be a significant challenge, as Macron’s party holds a minority and opposition factions have shown little interest in cooperation.
France’s political landscape has been fraught with turmoil since June, when Macron dissolved the National Assembly and called for elections. The results left the lower house deeply divided among three competing blocs: the left-wing New Popular Front alliance, Marine Le Pen’s far-right party, and centrist lawmakers who generally support the president. This fragmentation set the stage for the collapse of Michel Barnier’s government, which fell after an alliance between the far right and left over next year’s budget.
