Der Spiegel Reportedly Uncovers Private Contact Information of U.S. Officials in Signal Breach

by | Mar 27, 2025

German news outlet Der Spiegel reportedly discovered private contact information for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, all of whom were linked to the recent Signal group chat security breach.

According to Der Spiegel, each official’s email address and phone number were readily accessible on the dark web. The outlet reported Wednesday that Hegseth’s mobile number and active email address were obtained from a commercial provider that sells personal information for marketing purposes.

A search of leaked user data revealed that Hegseth’s email address—and, in some cases, associated passwords—appeared in more than 20 publicly accessible leaks. His contact details were also linked to a WhatsApp account that was recently deleted, the report stated.

Waltz’s information was obtained through the same unnamed provider and was connected to his Microsoft Teams, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, and Signal accounts. Several leaked databases also contained passwords tied to his email address.

Gabbard’s email address was reportedly found on Reddit and WikiLeaks, with links to her WhatsApp and Signal profiles. Ten additional leaks surfaced the same identifying details.
