Democrats have won control of both chambers of Congress following Tuesday’s midterm elections, changing the political makeup of Washington for the next two years.
Democrats picked up at least seven Senate seats, including victories in several traditionally Republican states, while also securing enough House seats to take the majority. The results mark a shift from Republican control of both chambers heading into the election.
Democratic gains included Senate seats in North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Ohio, Iowa, Kansas and Maine. Several House and Senate contests were still awaiting final results Wednesday morning, but the outcome has established Democratic control of Congress.
