CIA Director John Ratcliffe to Launch Probe Into COVID-19 Origins

by | Jan 24, 2025

Newly confirmed CIA Director John Ratcliffe has announced plans to initiate a probe into what the U.S. intelligence community knew about the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ratcliffe intends to direct investigators to review evidence held by the CIA and other agencies regarding the possibility that the virus leaked from a laboratory in Wuhan, China.

The CIA has faced criticism for its handling of COVID-19 origin analyses, with allegations suggesting agency analysts were influenced to downplay the possibility of a lab leak. While the virus’s emergence in China is widely accepted, debates over its origin have persisted.

Ratcliffe, sworn in on Thursday, criticized former CIA Director John Brennan for a mismanaged tenure during the Obama administration. “It would be fair to say his tenure was one of the worst things that has ever happened to the agency,” Ratcliffe said.

Addressing threats posed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) will be a key focus of Ratcliffe’s leadership. He underscored, in discussions with President Trump, the importance of investigating COVID-19’s origins and their link to the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Ratcliffe pledged transparency and urgency in addressing the issue.

The new CIA director argued that U.S. intelligence and foreign policy efforts are lagging in addressing China as a primary geopolitical adversary. He contends that financial ties and the influence of special interests, from Washington to Silicon Valley, have diverted attention and resources toward Russia instead of focusing on China’s actions.
