Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor of New York on Tuesday, after a campaign on advancing progressive policies across the city and pushing back against the Trump administration.
The 34-year-old far-left state lawmaker defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. He now faces the challenge of managing America’s largest city while fulfilling unrealistic campaign promises.
At 34, Mamdani will be the city’s youngest mayor in more than a century when he takes office on Jan. 1. The election drew more than 2 million voters, the largest turnout in a mayoral contest in over 50 years. With roughly 90% of the votes counted, Mamdani led Cuomo by about nine percentage points.
President Trump has warned he would withhold federal funds from New York if Mamdani assumes office.
