Whistleblowers expose security failures at Trump rally

by | Jul 18, 2024

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) has announced that whistleblowers informed the Committee about significant resource shortages faced by the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) during President Trump's campaign event in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The shortages were attributed to staffing commitments at the NATO summit and Jill Biden's event in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

This revelation has prompted serious concerns about the adequacy of security planning by local, state, and federal law enforcement for the rally, which saw multiple security breaches. These lapses allowed an assassin to target President Trump, resulting in the death of an attendee and critical injuries to two others.

In light of these events, Chairman Jordan has sent a letter to Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Christopher Wray, requesting that he address a series of questions during his upcoming testimony before the Committee on Wednesday, July 24, 2024.

Key questions for Director Wray include:

  1. What is the number of agents, analysts, and support personnel the FBI has allocated to this investigation?

  2. Was there coordination between the FBI, USSS, and the Western Pennsylvania Field Office (WPFC) before President Trump's event on July 13?

  3. How many buildings were required to be secured both inside and outside the security perimeter for President Trump's event on July 13?

  4. Why was the roof of the AGR International building not secured?

  5.  How much time passed between identifying the shooter as a potential threat and the attempted assassination?

  6. How much time elapsed between the local police officer's encounter with the shooter on the sloped roof and the attempted assassination?

  7.  Has the FBI interviewed the local police officer who encountered the shooter?

  8. What have the FBI’s evaluations of the shooter’s phone and digital activity revealed about his actions and movements leading up to the attempted assassination?

  9.  Does the FBI's investigation focus solely on the shooter and his motivations, or does it also cover the security failures that led to the attempted assassination?

  10. Were security measures at President Trump's event compromised due to resource constraints from the NATO Summit and/or First Lady Dr. Jill Biden's event in Pittsburgh?

  11. How did communication breakdowns among various law enforcement agencies impact the ability to identify and mitigate the threat posed by the shooter?

  12. What actions did the USSS take to secure President Trump after the threat was identified?

Chairman Jordan’s request emphasizes the need for a detailed investigation into the security procedures and interagency coordination that failed to prevent the tragic events at the Butler rally. The Committee is seeking thorough answers to ensure accountability and prevent similar security breaches in the future.
