The United Nations' top court has ordered Israel to immediately cease its military operation in Rafah, a city in southern Gaza.
This ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is part of an ongoing genocide case initiated by South Africa. Although ICJ rulings are final and binding, the court lacks an enforcement mechanism, and its decisions have been ignored in the past.
This decision coincides with increasing international and domestic demands for Israel to end the war in Gaza.
The prosecutor at the International Criminal Court (ICC), a separate entity in The Hague, Netherlands, has sought arrest warrants for Hamas leaders, as well as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the October 7 attacks on Israel and the subsequent conflict in Gaza.
Meanwhile, families of Israeli hostages held in Gaza have heightened pressure on Netanyahu to secure the captives' release, releasing graphic footage of female members of the Israel Defense Forces before their abduction.
