Trump Signs Executive Order to Enforce Immigration Laws, Target Sanctuary Cities

by | Apr 28, 2025

President Trump has signed an executive order aimed at strengthening federal enforcement of immigration laws and targeting jurisdictions that obstruct them. The order asserts the federal government’s constitutional authority over immigration and national security, citing ongoing concerns about illegal entry at the southern border and threats from criminal organizations.

Under the order, the Attorney General and Secretary of Homeland Security must, within 30 days, publish a list of states and localities that impede federal immigration efforts. These “sanctuary jurisdictions” will be formally notified of their defiance and possible violations of federal criminal laws.

Federal agencies are directed to identify grants and contracts that could be suspended or terminated for non-compliant jurisdictions. Officials who continue to resist federal immigration laws may face legal action aimed at bringing them into compliance.

The order also instructs agencies to ensure that aliens in sanctuary areas are not improperly receiving federal public benefits, and seeks to stop state and local laws that unlawfully favor illegal aliens over American citizens, particularly in areas like tuition benefits and criminal justice.

Trump’s directive emphasizes restoring the enforcement of U.S. laws and protecting American communities from the public safety risks associated with illegal immigration.
