Trump Says He Had “Very Good” Call With Erdogan, Talks War and Diplomacy

by | May 5, 2025

President Donald J. Trump participates in a joint press conference with Turkish President Recep Erdogan Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2019, in the East Room of the White House.

President Trump said he had a “very good and productive” phone conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, discussing a range of topics including the Russia-Ukraine war, Syria, and Gaza.

According to Trump, Erdogan invited him to visit Turkey in the future, and the Turkish leader also plans to come to Washington. Trump praised their past working relationship during his previous term, noting Erdogan’s swift cooperation in securing the release of Pastor Andrew Brunson from a Turkish prison “immediately upon my request.”

Trump said he looks forward to working with Erdogan again—especially on ending the “ridiculous, but deadly” war between Russia and Ukraine.
