President Trump has revoked Secret Service protection for Kamala Harris, ending an extension quietly granted by Joe Biden before he left office.
Federal law provides six months of protection for former vice presidents, which expired for Harris on July 21. But Biden had signed a confidential directive authorizing an additional year of coverage, according to people familiar with the arrangement. Trump canceled that order in a memorandum to the Department of Homeland Security dated Thursday.
“You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris,” the letter states.
With Secret Service coverage removed, she will lose not only a personal protective detail but also access to federal threat intelligence and monitoring, which officials say includes analysis of in-person risks, digital communications, and social media activity. Her Los Angeles residence will also no longer be secured by federal agents.
Her husband, Doug Emhoff, lost his own protective detail on July 21 under standard provisions for spouses of former vice presidents.
